The 1994 Winter Olympics, also known as Lillehammer '94, were an international winter multi-sport event held from February 12 to February 27 in and around Lillehammer, Norway. They were officially known as the XVII Olympic Winter Games (Norwegian: De 17. olympiske vinterleker; Nynorsk: Dei 17. olympiske vinterleikane). Lillehammer was chosen to host the 1994 Winter Olympics on September 15, 1988, at the 94th IOC Session in Seoul, South Korea, after failing to qualify for the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France. It was the first Winter Olympics to be held in a year other than the Summer Olympics and the first Winter Olympics to occur two years after the previous Winter Olympics. After the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden, and the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland, this is the second Winter Olympics to be hosted in Norway. The first were held in Oslo in 1952. This is also the fourth Olympics to be held in a Nordic nation altogether. The city that has held the Olympic Games at the farthest north is Lillehammer. The 1992 Summer and Winter Olympics were held in Albertville, France, and Barcelona, Spain, respectively. This was the final of three consecutive Olympics to be hosted in Europe.
