The World Cup in 1990 (bootleg, set 2) The 14th FIFA World Cup, a four-year football competition for senior men's national teams, was known as "Bootleg." Italy, the second nation to host the event for a second time, hosted it from June 8 to July 8, 1990. (the first being Mexico in 1986). Qualifying started in April 1988, with teams from 116 national football associations participating. Along with the host nation Italy and the defending champion Argentina, 22 teams made it through the round.
