Super Smash Bros. (USA)
The Super Smash Bros. (USA) series deviates from the typical fighting game genre by having players aim to knock other characters off a level rather than reducing their health bar. As damage is taken, each player's damage total—represented as a percentage—increases. Attacks knock the character farther and farther as this proportion increases. The player must launch their character off the edge of the stage—which is an open space rather than an enclosed arena—in order to knock out (KO) an opponent. Characters that are knocked off stage sometimes try to get back on stage by jumping; certain characters can jump farther than others, so they can have an easier time "recovering" than others.
In video games like Street Fighter and Tekken, players are required to commit complex button combinations to memory; yet, in Super Smash Bros., all character moves are accessible with the same control combinations. Characters can also roam around freely and are not restricted to just fighting opponents. Compared to other fighting games, the game places more of an emphasis on aerial and platforming skills. It has bigger, more dynamic stages instead of just a flat platform. Dodging and blocking elements are also included in Smash Bros. It is also possible to grab and toss other characters. Included is support for the Nintendo 64 Rumble Pak.
