Battle City (Japan)
Players operate tanks and discharge projectiles to destroy enemy tanks on the playfield Battle City (Japan). From the top of the screen, hostile tanks try to destroy the player's base (a phoenix symbol) and tank. A level is completed when the player destroys 20 enemy tanks, however the game ends if the player loses all lives or their base. The player can destroy the base, therefore they can lose even after destroying all opposing tanks.
Battle City's 35 stages are 13 units wide and 13 units high. Each map has various geography and challenges. Brick walls can be destroyed by the player's tank or an enemy tank, steel walls by the player if they have three stars, bushes that hide tanks, ice fields that make tank control difficult, and water patches that tanks cannot cross. Later levels are harder because hostile tanks may lure players away from their base so another tank can demolish it. Flashing red tanks also randomly power up when destroyed. A clock pauses all enemies, a shield protects, and a bomb kills all on-screen foes. The largest enemy tank takes four shots to destroy.
