EarthBound (USA)

Many classic aspects of role-playing games are present in EarthBound: the player leads a group of characters as they explore the two-dimensional world of the game, which is made up of cities, villages, caverns, and dungeons. The party accumulates experience points for wins as the player engages in combat with opponents along the route. A character's level will rise if they accrue enough experience points. This boosts each character's statistics, including defense, attack, and maximum hit points (HP) and psychic points (PP), in a pseudo-random manner. There is no distinction between settlements and the outside world, and the world is completely continuous instead of having an overworld map screen like most console RPGs of the time. The worldview adopted is another unconventional component. While most 2D role-playing games use a "top-down" view on a grid or an isometric perspective, this game uses oblique projection.
