Mortal Kombat 4 (USA)
Mortal Kombat 4 is played similarly to the other games in the series; characters are limited to a 2D path, save for sidestepping, and combos and the run button are still utilized. A restricted weapon system is introduced in MK4, enabling each character to draw a specific weapon by pressing a predetermined combination of buttons. The punch buttons are mostly used to operate the weapons after they are mounted. This covers throwing the weapons as well as swinging and clubbing. In keeping with the series' other addition of arena objects like severed heads and boulders, the weapons can also be deliberately dropped. The opposing character can pick up and utilize an opponent's weapon if it is dropped.
The combo system in MK4 was given a "Maximum Damage" cap, which automatically breaks combos if they deal a player more than a certain amount of damage. This prevents infinite combos, though it may be deleted using a code. Mortal Kombat 4 features two standard Fatalities per character in addition to two Stage Fatalities that are limited to specific arenas and involve the victorious character throwing their opponent into a section of the arena where they are killed. This is in contrast to Mortal Kombat Trilogy, which featured multiple finishing moves of various kinds. With the exception of Goro in the home editions, this game does not have non-playable boss characters like the previous three did.
