Street Fighter Alpha 3

The "Auto" and "Manual" modes from the previous Alpha games are gone in Street Fighter Alpha 3, which now gives the player a choice of three distinct "isms" or playing styles. Based on the earlier Alpha games, where the player had access to many Super Combo moves and a three-level Super Combo gauge, the traditional playing style is known as A-ism (or Z-ism in Japan). The word "X-ism" refers to the Japanese title of the game, Super Street Fighter II X. X-ism is a straightforward style based on Super Street Fighter II Turbo, where the player has access to a single, potent Super Combo attack and a single, level Super Combo gauge. The third style is called V-ism, or "variable" style; it's a special style that doesn't let the player employ Super Combos but lets them make creative combos that resemble those in Street Fighter Alpha 2. The player of X-ism can only employ one powerful Level 3 Super Combo move and is unable to air-block or execute Alpha Counters. The player must press both the kick and the punch of the same strength in order to trigger V-ism's Custom Combo. A-ism has greater assault power than V-ism and a comparable degree of defense, whereas X-ism has the most attack power but the lowest defense. Each character in all three modes has a different moveset, which greatly deepens the gameplay. Moreover, there are hidden modes that provide the player additional advantages and disadvantages (such as Classic mode, which prohibits the use of Super Combos but also prevents the character from being knocked into the air and juggled).

In addition, Alpha 3 adds a "Guard Power Gauge" that runs out every time a player blocks; if the gauge runs out entirely, the player will still be open to attacks. The bar can be broken and then filled back up to its original maximum several times. It's important to note that the character in X-Ism has the biggest guard bar and the least amount of defense out of all the character types; the same is true for V-ism, with A-Zism in the middle. Characters also differ in terms of their guard bars; Zangief, for example, has a fairly large guard bar. Guard crushing is not feasible in Dramatic Battle bouts because there is no guard bar.
