Dragon's Lair

Dragon's Lair is a laser disc video game released by Cinematronics in 1983. In the game, the protagonist, Dirk the Daring, is a knight who is trying to rescue Princess Daphne from the evil dragon Singe, who has trapped her. princess in the castle of the evil wizard Mordroc. It features animation by former Disney animator Don Bluth. Most other games of the era represented the character as a ghost figure, consisting of a series of pixels displayed in a row. Due to the hardware limitations of the time, artists were very limited in the amount of detail they could achieve with that technique; The resolution, frame rate, and number of frames are severely limited. Dragon's Lair overcomes those limitations by exploiting LaserDisc's vast storage potential but imposes other limitations on actual gameplay. The game may crash as the laser disc searches for the correct scene to play and the cabinet is difficult to maintain. It was billed as the first true 3D video game and the meeting point of video games and cartoons. Its success has spawned numerous portals, sequels, and related games. In the 21st century, it has been repackaged in some formats (such as for the iPhone) as a "classic" or historical game. It is currently one of only three video games (along with Pong and Pac-Man) hosted at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
