Ecco the Dolphin

Ecco can hurt enemies by crashing into them quickly. Pressing a certain button lets you swim faster and faster over time, and holding the button keeps the speed. When jumping out of the water, the player can do a spin in the air that is just for looks.

The dolphin's real habits inspired two game features: a button that makes Ecco sing, lets him talk to other crustaceans, and lets him interact with some objects. For echolocation, you press and hold the same button for a long time to play back the song. This makes a map of the area. On some levels, there are big crystals called "glyphs" that do different things when Ecco touches them or sings to them. Some paths are blocked, and to get through, you have to find a "key-glyph." Others give information, and at higher levels, some add health or air or make Ecco temporarily immune to damage.

Ecco is a mammal, so he needs to come up for air every so often. If he doesn't, the vent will be found. If Ecco's "air gauge" runs out, he will lose health quickly, which is like drowning. His health is shown on a separate meter (above the air meter). It goes down when an enemy attacks or when his air meter runs out, and it goes back up when he eats fish, "sings" to the clam, or, later in the game, sings with statues or figures. Ecco's song can be upgraded at two different points in the game. One upgrade makes Ecco's song work as a ranged weapon when used with an attack, and the other makes Ecco's song work as a melee weapon when used with an attack. Sharks are confused for a short time, and small enemies are frozen for a short time. Ecco will take damage if he touches an enemy in any way other than an attack. The enemies range from seahorses to giant octopuses.
