Ecco - The Tides Of Time

The game play is the same in Tides of Time as it was in its predecessor. Ecco's main attack is to stab enemies quickly. He can also use his sonar to talk to other crustaceans and interact with things like Crystal Glyphs. He can also use echolocation to make a map of the area appear. Ecco can attack enemies from a long way away by using his charge and sonar at the same time. Ecco has to go up into the air every so often because he is a mammal.

Ecco must go on a "scavenger hunt" to find Asterite's missing orbs and follow other dolphins through an underwater maze. There are also two new power-ups. The first is "Pulsar," which lets Ecco fire a sonar attack at enemies from any direction for the rest of the level. The second is the "Metasphere," which lets Ecco change into other animals. There are different transformations for each level, like a seagull, a jellyfish, a shark, a school of fish, or a Vortex drone.

Some stages use pseudo 3D effects. During these stages, Ecco has to swim through loops that move while trying to avoid or attack enemies. If Ecco misses too many rounds or takes too much damage, the player has to start over.
