A game that simulates space travel is Wing Commander. The player controls a ship that engages variously equipped opposing ships. As the name implies, there will usually be a wingman controlled by AI that the player can command. The combat is influenced by real-world dogfighting, in which ships engage in close-quarters combat and maneuver to go around one another while evading bullets and the occasional rocket, much like Star Wars and other soft science fiction programs. In general, missions have numerous goals, however as long as the protagonist survives, the game can still move forward even if goals are not met. Campaign outcomes are influenced by overall performance: achieving goals leads to medals, rank advancements, and access to better ships. The plot's development is also influenced by the player's overall performance.
