Varth - operation thunderstorm (920714 etc)
Varth's gameplay draws heavily from 1942 and other games in Capcom's 194X series. The goal is to destroy enemy units while avoiding being hit, and reach the end of the level, which sometimes ends with a boss fight. There are 30 levels in the game. An enemy hit will cause the player to lose a plane. The biggest difference between Varth and most other games in the genre of the time is the inclusion of items known as "Pods". When the player picks up an item in the party, a pair of shells will follow the player and carry their own weapon to supplement their cannon. In addition, groups can completely block most (but not all) forms of attack from enemies, making the player nearly invulnerable to attack from whatever direction the groups are placed. Players can choose from two formations for their team—fixed or smart. In fixed mode, both groups remain directly in front of the player to show the planes impregnable from the front, but leave them open to the sides and from the rear. In the smart position, the pods will remain separate from each other at a 180-degree angle and move in the direction of the incoming flame. If enemy fire slides between shells before they can react (which can be common in levels after large numbers of enemies appear on the screen), the player will be vulnerable to attack and only have the option to do so. choose to move in the hope of avoiding being hit by bullets.
