Secret of Monkey Island, The
Monkey Island Secret is a 2D adventure game played from a third person perspective. Through a point-and-click interface, the player guides protagonist Guybrush Threepwood through the game's world and interacts with the environment by choosing from twelve verb commands (nine in newer versions) such as "talk to" to communicate with characters and "pick up" to collect items between commands and world objects to successfully solve puzzles and thus progress in the game. While chatting with other characters, the player can choose between topics for discussion listed in the conversation tree; the game was one of the first to incorporate such a system. The action in the game is frequently interrupted by cutscenes. Like other LucasArts adventure games, The Secret of Monkey Island has a design philosophy that makes it nearly impossible for the player's character to die (Guybrush drowns if he's underwater for more than ten minutes).
