Vulcan Venture (New)
To combat the second onslaughts of the Bacterion Empire, led by Gofer, the enormous head, the player assumes the position of the Vic Viper spaceship's pilot once more. The gameplay from the first Gradius game has been carried over into Gradius II, but with improvements from the Salamander spin-off (Life Force). This is mostly noticeable in two of the selectable weapon setups. The addition of the "boss rush," also known as "boss parade" or "boss alley," a level made up entirely of boss encounters, was another first for the series.
Gradius II keeps the Gradius selection bar, but the player can now pick from four alternative weapon progressions and configurations. Each scheme has multiples (Options) and speed-up, but different "Missile," "Double," and "Laser" weaponry. The player is limited to a maximum of four multiples. Shield and forcefield are two other types of shielding that are available. The forcefield option improves protection for the entire spacecraft, albeit only against three strikes, and the shield option increases durability but only for the front of the Vic Viper. The only shielding available to protect the entire spacecraft in the Famicom version is a force field, which can withstand five hits and is included in four different weapon configurations and progressions. Additionally, "Double" and "Laser" must be activated twice to perform at their full potential.
